This research study is about tobacco/nicotine vaping cessation among young adults. The purpose of this study is to find out how factors in your environment influence your tobacco vaping and how we can best use smartphone messages to help young adults change their vaping behavior.

The study participation will take about 4 hours over a period of 30 days of data collection via a smartphone app.

If you agree to participate in this study, the following procedures will occur:

• First, you will be asked to complete a short screening questionnaire to see if you are eligible.
• You will then send us a picture of your ID that has your name, a picture of you, and your birthdate (like a driver’s license) so that we can make sure you are eligible to participate. The picture of your photo ID will be deleted after the study is over.
• Fill out a baseline questionnaire about yourself and your health and vaping behaviors on a computer or on your smartphone.
• Receive written instructions and additional training on how to use the study smartphone app over the phone from the study staff members.
• Download and learn to use the study app on your phone.
• For the next 30 days, you will be asked to fill out brief surveys about your tobacco vaping and other health behaviors on the study app for up to 7 times per day. Each survey will take about 1 minute to complete. We will monitor your incoming data and may contact you on your phone throughout the study, if, for example, we see that you stop completing surveys. You will also be asked to upload pictures of vaping devices you are using. 
• Once your participation in the study has ended or if you no longer wish to participate, you can remove the study app from your smartphone by uninstalling the app.

Upon completion of the study, you will be paid up to $200 for your time.

You will receive payment in the following manner:

• $20 for completing the baseline survey
• $120 for completing assessments on your phone on every day of the 30-day study period ($4 for every day you complete at least one assessment on the study app)
• $60 bonus if you complete at least 80% of the phone-based assessments
• If you decide to stop participating in the study before the 30-day study period is over, your incentive will be calculated based on the total number of days you have participated in the study. You can contact the study team to request your incentive.
• Payments will come in the form of Amazon gift cards and will be emailed to you at the end of the study period or at the end of your participation

Our team wants to study how contextual factors, such as location and surrounding people, impact the behavior of vaping tobacco and/or cannabis among young adults.

The primary data collected in this research study will be questionnaires completed on the computer or on your smartphone.

Initially, you will be asked to complete a short screening questionnaire to see if you are eligible. We will then ask you to send us a picture of your ID to make sure you fit the inclusion criteria and send you a link to a baseline questionnaire, which will take approximately 15 minutes to complete. After that, you will download the research study app on your phone to keep track of your vaping of tobacco and/or cannabis and complete up to 7 short questionnaires per day on the app for 30 days. Each questionnaire will take about 1 minute to complete. After completing the 30 days of the study using the app, you may be selected for an exit interview either in person or over the phone, or via Zoom (about 60 minutes long) and asked about your needs for vaping cessation and recommendations for smartphone-based support.

All participant data will be kept strictly confidential and we will never sell or distribute your data, or publish any information that would identify you. ​
 

You can receive $20 for completing the baseline survey, up to $180 for completing the questionnaires on the research study app, and $100 for participating into the follow-up interview.
